Virtual Primary Care as an Employee Benefit: What Employers Should Know

Virtual primary care can make healthcare easier to reach — but employers should evaluate the experience, not just the feature list.

Virtual primary care has moved from a niche telehealth add-on to a serious benefits-design option. The appeal is straightforward: give employees a clear place to start, reduce friction around routine care, and help people navigate a healthcare system that is often difficult to use.

WHAT VIRTUAL PRIMARY CARE ACTUALLY IS

Virtual primary care generally combines remote access to clinicians with some level of ongoing primary-care relationship, care coordination or navigation. It is broader than a one-off video visit for a sore throat, but it is not a replacement for comprehensive major medical insurance.

The best models give employees a reliable front door for everyday needs and a path to the next level of care when an in-person exam, specialist, imaging, emergency care or hospital treatment is appropriate.

WHY EMPLOYERS ARE LOOKING AT IT

KFF's 2025 Employer Health Benefits Survey found that 30% of firms with 50 or more workers that offered health benefits had a contract for virtual primary care services beyond what workers already received through their health-plan networks. That is a meaningful signal that employers are looking for ways to improve access without simply adding another insurance plan.

WHAT A STRONG VIRTUAL-CARE BENEFIT SHOULD SOLVE

  • Access: Can employees reach a qualified medical professional quickly when a need arises?
  • Continuity: Does the service maintain context from one interaction to the next, or does every visit start over?
  • Navigation: Can the team help with prescriptions, referrals, specialists, insurance questions and medical bills?
  • Family usability: Is the service easy for spouses, partners and dependents to use?
  • Cost clarity: Do employees understand what is included and whether there are per-visit charges?
  • Escalation: Is there a clear process when virtual care is not enough?

AN EXAMPLE: THE AMAZE HEALTH MODEL

Amaze Health describes its service as a single virtual-care platform providing primary and urgent care, chronic-disease management, mental-health services, prescriptions, virtual dental and orthopedic support, billing advocacy, insurance support, health education and family care. Amaze also states that members can connect with its medical team and patient advocates by audio, video or in-app messaging with 24/7 live support.

That broader navigation component matters. A virtual-care benefit can be more useful when employees know not only who to call, but also what to do after the first interaction.

DO NOT EVALUATE IT IN ISOLATION

Virtual primary care should be reviewed alongside the rest of the benefits package. Employers should ask whether it complements the existing major-medical plan, helps employees navigate high deductibles or limited access, and reduces duplication with other point solutions already being funded.

It is also worth comparing utilization, employee feedback and actual use patterns after implementation. A benefit that looks impressive during enrollment but is rarely used may not be creating the value the employer expected.

A SIMPLE EMPLOYER CHECKLIST

  1. Map what employees already receive through the medical plan.
  2. Identify the biggest access and navigation pain points.
  3. Compare virtual-care vendors on scope, hours, staffing and continuity.
  4. Confirm how family members are covered and what costs employees may face.
  5. Build communication into onboarding and open enrollment.
  6. Review utilization and employee experience after launch.

Virtual primary care works best when it removes friction rather than adding another app employees have to remember. Learn more about health plan optimization and how ERP approaches group health insurance strategy.
